The day had finally come for their young boys and girls to prove themselves to be men and women worth fighting for. Ulf, leader of the tribe and father to Biran, had been up for some time now, mulling over everything that could and would go wrong. There was a group of ten here. Each all ready to test their steal against the metal of this unforgiving world. The task was simple: To head out, hunt a quarry worthy of their talents, survive the night, and return back in the morning with a trophy of their kill if not the spoils of their hunt. It was not so much the fear of Biran finding nothing but a doe, but the fear of Biran never returning home again. It was out of the question for Ulf to venture out and watch him hunt. That was breaking ceremonial laws. It was the law of the land: Only the strong can survive. And, though Biran did not understand, Ulf had drilled as much as he could in the few years he had him in order to prepare him for this day.
It was finally predawn and the ceremony needed to commence. Leaving his bungalow, Ulf stood before his young to be warriors and studied each and every one of them for some would not return. Cleaning his voice, he spoke loudly yet clearly for not only they to hear, but the entire village. "Young warriors! You kneel before me, ready to test your mantel. As tradition demands, I shall allow you to head out of this village as children and return to us as men and woman of the tribe. It does not matter what it is you hunt, so long as it is worthy to be hunted and provide for you. Upon returning to me after the next sunrise, you shall tell me what it is you had hunted and why. Remember, just because you can hunt something, does not mean you should hunt it." He paused and glanced at all ten of them for a brief moment each, looking into the souls of his to be warriors. He was stalling long enough. It was about time to let them depart. When you return and tell me of your hunt, white marks will be placed upon you somewhere along your bodies to symbolize your coming of age. In the ending ceremonies, that simple white paint will be etched upon your bare skin for all to see for you will finally be a true hunter. Come, the time has drawn forth, I release you to the wilds. May your spirit guild your hunt, may your body grant you health, and may your mind provide you assurance."
Drums started behind him, signaling to the young children that the time had finally come. Dawn spilled over the lands. Their marks would be made upon this day. It was out of Ulf's hands now. From this moment on, it was simply Biran vs the savage wilds of Australia.
